With 10 young thrillseekers dying in the past 18 months, it is not surprising that the New Zealand Prime Minister has promised an immediate review into the safety standards in that country’s adventure travel industry. With comments such as ‘out of control thrill firms’ and ‘cowboy companies are a growing problem’, this is obviously a huge concern and regulations need to be tightened and cowboy outfits closed down.

Up, Up, and Away
After consuming a hearty breakfast, we depart for the trailhead. It’s close to our conveniently located inn, so we take a leisurely stroll – greeting friendly locals and shopkeepers along the way.
As the Christmas holidays come to an end and the remnants of family visits are swept under the rug, the children tire of their new toys in an ever hurrying pace and work begins anew, it seems as though the hectic pace of the holidays is put behind us yet again.

There’s a funny scene in Romancing the Stone when Michael Douglas’ character meets Kathleen Turner’s character and agrees to take her to a phone booth hundreds of miles away. He simply refuses to help her carry her completely impractical luggage and a few scenes later goes even further by chopping the heels off her shoes so she can actually walk in them. This little fiasco encompasses the essence of packing for adventure travel. Less is most definitely more!
