Are you and your family interested in taking a vacation this year? If so, you are not alone. Each year a large percentage of American families make the decision to have a summer vacation. Popular vacation destinations include amusement parks, beaches, and campgrounds. But, did you know that you can also have your next family vacation aboard a cruise ship?

Cruise ships have been successfully operating for a number of years now. Many families enjoy summer vacations aboard a cruise ship, but even more don’t consider it as a possibility. If you are looking for a different way to spend quality time with your family, you are urged to at least considering taking a family cruise.

When it comes to vacations aboard a cruise ship, there are many individuals who automatically assume that cruise ships are not “family friendly.” If you believe this popular misconception, you could be missing out on one of the greatest opportunities of your life. There are a large number of cruise lines, each offering different cruises. With all of the cruise ships available, you are sure to find at least one that can offer your family fun on the water.

Just a few of the many family activities found aboard a cruise ship include dinners, movies, and plays. Additional activities may be available. The family activities found a cruise ship often depends on the cruise ship line. In addition to activities for the whole family, a large number of cruise ships have activities that are designed specifically for children. While your children are participating at these fun, but supervised activities, you could be enjoying a private moment with your spouse.

If you are interested in learning more about the family fun activities found aboard a cruise ship, you are encouraged to start researching. This research can easily be done by examining a number of cruise ships. In your search, you will likely see that there are a number of cruise ships designed specifically for those with children. You do not have to limit yourself just to family cruises, but you may find them beneficial.

To find a family fun cruise, without doing all of the legwork yourself, you may want to speak with a travel agent. For a small fee, a travel agent can research and arrange your next family cruise ship vacation. In addition to compiling information on family cruise ships, your travel agent is also likely to offer you a satisfaction guaranteed policy. These policies are designed to assist you or offer you a refund in the event your vacation is unsuccessful or not what you expected.

If you are unable to afford the assistance of a travel agent, you should be able to book your own cruise vacation online. A large number of popular cruise lines, including Celebrities Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Lines, and Disney Cruise Lines, have online websites. These websites can be used to view the activities aboard a particular ship, review the costs associated with booking a cruise, and to make online reservations. Booking your own cruise ship vacation is an excellent way to find the perfect cruise ship for your family and save money at the same time.

Whether you book your own family cruise vacation or you use the professional assistance of a travel agent, you are likely to enjoy your vacation choice. In fact, so many families enjoy the family vacation they took aboard a cruise ship that many return the next year

Are you interested in taking a cruise? If so, you are not alone. Each year a large number of individuals consider vacationing aboard a cruise ship. If you have never been on a cruise ship before, you may be wondering what activities, facilities, and services can be found onboard. The activities found onboard a cruise ship will vary from ship to ship, but many cruise ships have a number of activities and services in common.

Some of the most well-known facilities found on cruise ships are dining halls, restaurants, and cafeterias. Large cruise ships may offer a number of onboard dining facilities. It is important to note that many of these dining facilities are considered upscale restaurants. In addition to a sit-down restaurant, there area usually a number of small eateries located onboard. Elegant dining restaurants are popular among cruisers. To ensure that you are able to enjoy an elegant meal, you are encouraged to schedule a reservation as soon as you board the ship.

Aside from dining facilities, bars and dancehalls are also found on most cruise ships. As with most of the bars and dancehalls found on land, there may be age restrictions in place. If you are traveling with your family, they may have to complete other activities while you enjoy the nightlight over the seas. If this should occur, you are in luck because most cruise ships have daycare centers and other activities geared towards children of all ages.

When it comes to placing your child in the care of a ship’s daycare center, you are urged to quickly familiarize yourself with the staff. This familiarization may help to calm your nerves. It is also important to note that cruise ship employees are often closely monitored, highly educated, and properly trained. While it may be difficult at first, you should feel comfortable leaving your child in the care of a cruise ship childcare worker.

Childcare is ideal for smaller children; however, if you are traveling with a teenager, daycare may not be an option. Swimming pools, libraries, video arcades, and movie theaters can often be found on cruise ships. Adult supervision is a policy that prevents children under a certain age from roaming freely around the ship.

Teenagers may be able to visit these facilities without adult supervision. Each cruise ship is likely to have different adult supervision policies. You are encouraged to review these policies before purchasing your tickets.

In addition to the above mentioned bars and dancehalls, gaming halls or casinos can be found on most cruise ships. As with gambling on land, there are age limits on those that can gamble aboard a cruise ship. Popular gambling activities include slots, blackjack, poker, and much more. Many onboard casinos are open for business twenty-four hours a day. Gambling is a popular cruise ship pastime. If you are booking a cruise just to gamble, you may want to further explore the gambling options aboard each ship.

Cruise ship operators know that many travelers take a cruise to escape their daily routines. Unfortunately for some, one routine that cannot be left behind is exercise. That is why almost all cruise ships have onsite fitness centers and fully equipped gyms. These gyms are often similar, and sometimes even better, than the gyms found in your hometown. In addition to a fitness center, a large number of cruise ships have jogging tracks.

If a particular activity or event is the only reason why you are interested in booking a cruise, you are urged to physically check for that event or activity before making your reservation. The above mentioned services, facilities, and activities are found on a number of popular cruise lines. These cruise lines are likely to include, but are not limited to, Carnival Cruise Lines, Paradise Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruises. With the click of a mouse or a toll free phone call, you can easily determine if your favorite activities can be found aboard the cruise ship of your choice.

Introduction

Before one can get into the intricate commercial details involved in operation of a fleet of cruise ships, one must first understand the definition of the term itself. Cruise ships are normally passenger ships that clients use to go for voyages or for leisurely trips. Consequently, cruise ships form a major component of the tourism industry. Most cruise ships operate in such a way that they can come back to their original ports; that is, they move in a circle. This is sharp contrast to ocean liners that move from one port to another without returning to their original port. The Cruise ship industry mostly focuses on North American and sometimes European clients. Clients in the Asian Pacific areas are usually served by older ships. (Terri, 2007)

Cruise ships make up a huge part of the global economy; this especially true when trips to be made involve the entire world. Statistics show that in the year 2001, there were about 167 cruise ship fleets. In the year 2005, there were about 200 hundred cruise ships; it has been projected that by the end of this year, the number will have increased by about thirty five percent. Most of the passengers who take up or enjoy services offered by cruise ships come from North America. It has been estimated that there are about seven million passengers who have boarded cruise ships in 2006. (Business Research and Economic Advisors, 2002)

Trade for operation of a fleet of cruise ships

Selecting appropriate constructors

Cruise ships normally carry large numbers of passengers. Consequently, one cruise ship will bring in numerous returns to a given business. Therefore, chances of making or building new cruise ships are minimal. However when one is operating a fleet, there may be a need to first construct. This should be done by involving only the best teams in the business. The proprietor should consult a reputable organisation that has experience in the construction of such infrastructures. One such Company found in the US is Kiewit Offshore Services. This company has been very effective in the process of creating a Bullwinkle jacket (main frame of a cruise ship) that weighed about fifty thousand tonnes and was almost one thousand four hundred feet tall. (Hershman, 1988)

After the main frame of the cruise ship has been constructed then a proprietor should approach a hotel constructing company. The purpose of such a team is to make the cruise ship more habitable by passengers. This is critical aspect of the ship building process because most people take up cruise ships for leisure purposes. They will therefore need all the recreational facilities that are associated with tourism such as hotels. Besides this, there may be a need to incorporate certain features like swimming pools, tennis courts to fill up space and add more activities for the potential clients.

Consideration of laws

After completion of the building process, it is important to familiarise oneself withal the laws and regulations governing the cruise ship industry. If the cruise ship will be operating in foreign waters, they need to consider getting permission from the respective countries where they will be operating. It should be noted that there are certain countries that still prohibit the operation of foreign flagged ships and proprietors must watch out and determine which countries those are. However, modern and developed economies are usually open-minded about the use of their waters by other foreign owned ships. (The Ocean Conservancy, 2002)

Availability of labour

There are always chances of finding good labour for the construction of a fleet of ships when the area chosen is characterised by deep waters. Therefore a proprietor should locate areas that have those characteristics before he can embark on his activities. Besides that, it is also necessary to check on the ship building facilities present within certain locations. Some areas my not be well endowed with this and it my therefore be necessary to choose appropriate site facilities.

Labour will also come in during operation of the cruise ships. This is because there may be numerous hotels within that fleet. There will therefore be need to recruit personnel from the hospitality industry. These are people who are familiar with the operations of hotels including housekeeping, bar or pub management and other aspects that will require attention in the process of operation. (Hill, 1997)

Adherence to industrial and environmental regulations

There are certain laws that have been instituted concerning the dispensation of waste products for cruise ships. It should be noted that cruise ships and especially a fleet of them have the potential to cause a lot of pollution if left unchecked. It is therefore the duty of the proprietor to make sure that the following types of wastes are kept on check;

solid wastes\hazardous wastes
oily wastes
gray water
black water (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2000)

One law which ought to be followed strictly is the Plastic Pollution and Control Act. This law prohibits the disposal of plastic material in waters. Besides this law, there are certain industry violations that must be fooled. The International Council of Cruise lines have come up with certain laws that govern the way cruise ships operate. First and foremost cruise ships must make sure that they adopt technologies that have recently come up in the industry. This applies to the operation and construction of cruise ships. Besides this, cruise ships are expected to adopt strategies that will lead to conservation of resources. On top of this, they are also expected to educate their staff. Another principle adhered to by the association is the minimisation of waste. (Bluewater Network, 2003)

Identification of routes

One should be very careful about the routes that are available to them during the operation of a fleet of cruise ships. This is because there are certain factors that will make life easier for passengers and the management itself. Here are some of the issues that should be considered before choosing a port

availability of terminals
nearness to airports
nearness to tourism sites
accessibility to important parts of the country (Terri, 2007)

Companies should make sure that they settle for terminals that are already in existence. It is usually advisable to take up old military terminals because those ones have been tried and tested. Besides that, military terminals usually outlive their purpose and are subsequently closed thus necessitating very little efforts in the achievement of their objectives.

Another aspect that the operation of a fleet of cruise ships could incorporate is the use of airports. This is because tourists may feel the need to see what a certain country has to offer and most of them prefer the use of air transport. On top of that, airports are essential in bringing customers to the collecting ports. Some of them might come from very distant places just to access the cruise ship. It will therefore be necessary to have a form of transport that will facilitate fast and efficient transport on land. (Bauer & Jack, 1988)

Ports should also be located where there are other tourist sites nearby. For example if it is in the US, a proprietor could choose a location in which there is accessibility of the statue of liberty. On top of this, there should be certain well known cities near those harbours. This is because there are certain areas that tourists may need to visit once they have reached land. It would be better if the sites chosen are world renowned.

Economic benefits to one’s country

Operation of a fleet of cruise ships can create numerous jobs for ones country. Some of the professions that can be accommodated include;

sports instructors
maintenance staff
chefs, waiters and restaurant managers
salesmen
seminar organisers (Marcus et al, 1976)

The world is becoming increasingly global. Therefore one can obtain a lot of benefits from the operation of cruise ship fleets for a given country. This stems from the fact that the country can collect lot of taxes from the business. Sometimes just one cruse ship can have about seven thousand passengers in it. Those passengers will have to pay for their trip in advance. This is normally taxed by the government. On top of that, there are a lot of economic activities that go on inside the cruise ships. There will be restaurants, shops, spas, sporting amenities, shopping facilities, conference rooms and even bars. Here, there will be exchange of currencies and those passengers will also be paying their taxes indirectly. (Kendall, 1979)

Besides bringing in revenue through taxes, operation of a fleet of cruise ships can also contribute to reduction of a country’s trade deficit. The North American passengers who happen to be the largest consumers of cruise ship services (90% of the consumers in the cruse ship industry coming from the US have contributed towards the booming state of the industry). That same country has highlighted that among the many contributors to their trade deficit, cruise ships fall in the ninth place. This implies that if the US was to start creating their own cruise ships instead of supporting foreign business then their trade deficit would have diminished drastically.

Conclusion

One can therefore conclude that the operation of a fleet of cruise ships has numerous economic considerations. One needs to choose the right constructors, the right ports, one also needs to follow rules and regulation in the cruise ship industry and they also need to consider availability of labour both during operation and construction. However after all these factors have been adhered to then the economic benefits will speak for themselves.

My wife and I go on a lot of cruises. It all started about 10 years ago when we got married. We honeymooned on the American Queen River Boat, a week long cruise up the Mississippi river. I must admit that was a fun trip. The boat could just pull up to the bank and drop a long gangway onto the levee and walk on or off…back then there was no security to go through…

Our second cruise a year later was aboard the Crown Odyssey, a smaller older ship, on a cruise through the Greek islands. What a trip! I discovered that I love old Greek and Roman ruins, and Mediterranean food is fantastic! Kathy says Greece has the best tomatoes of anywhere in the world. We had a blast, visiting places like Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Istanbul.

During that second cruise we built a website about the cruise and we would upload pictures and text to the site during our stops in port. We would find an internet café and do the uploading while sipping a cold drink. We have a photo on our site with Kathy seated at a computer at an internet café in Athens, and out the window over her shoulder you can see the Parthenon.

One of the best things about cruising is that you can see damned near everything you ever wanted to see by going on a cruise. For example, one day I told Kathy that if she could find a cruise where I could see the Egyptian Pyramids, then I would go. I think it took her all of about 20 minutes to book the cruise. Silly me. But hey…there I am at the pyramids and in front of the sphinx in Egypt. It turns out that the Pyramids are just a couple of hours by bus from the port of Alexandria.

Other places I’ve found myself on these cruises are eating French fries in a McDonald’s in Beijing, after seeing the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City! On that same cruise I had been to ground zero in Nagasaki Japan. Now I must admit I never thought I would ever be at ground zero where the Atomic bomb was dropped. Speaking of McDonald’s, there is one at Red Square in Moscow. I was there during our Baltic cruise. We docked for a couple of days in St. Petersburg, and took a plane to Moscow for a day.

Now I grew up in the days of the cold war, and it’s hard to get used to a McDonald’s in Moscow. Earlier on that trip I visited Berlin and we saw what was left of the Berlin Wall. It was simply remarkable for me to be visiting such places. Never thought I would find myself standing in East Berlin.

Ok so there are a lot of amazing destinations, but not all cruises are destination cruises. Some are what my wife and I call “Party” cruises. Not much to see at the ports of call, but lots and lots of partying. A recent cruise we went on to the eastern Caribbean was one of the most fun filled cruises I’ve been on. Kathy had been conversing with about 72 people who were going to be on the cruise on something called “Cruise Critics” a message board place where people meet to chat about cruises.

So we had cruise critic parties frequently on board the ship, and went to the shore excursions as a group. It was like doing everything with a whole boatload of best friends you were meeting for the first time.

I hope my wife keeps dragging me on these cruises…I’ll be kicking and screaming the whole way with a big grin on my face.

There are many cruise ships now that have Freestyle Dining (Norwegian Cruises) or Choice Dining (Prince Cruise line) available. Or on Disney Cruise Lines they have what is called “Rotational Dining”. They have you and your tablemates rotate through the three restaurants each evening.

TIP: There is usually open seating for breakfast and lunch in the main dining room. Be adventurous with the menu because if you don’t like something you can send it back for a replacement. And if they have two things on the menu that you like ask for both of them. My husband, John, always orders the Filet Mignon and the Lobster Tail when they are served on the same night. Many times he tells the waiter to bring what the waiter recommends for that evening.

This means you don’t have to choose first or second seating. (First seating is 6:00 to 6:30 and Second seating is usually 8:00-8:30). There can be more than one restaurant where you just walk in when you are ready to dine. Every ship will ask for your dining preference when you book your cruise. You can indicate first, second or flexible dining, whichever will make you more comfortable. The newer ships have a 24 hour dining spot which is always casual so if you don’t want to do the formal nights you don’t have to, although I find dressing up to be quite fun.

You will have many options for each meal. You may have any meal delivered to your room, taken in the buffet restaurant or in the dining room. There is usually outdoor dining around the pool with hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, salads, even Tacos.

There are also alternative dining rooms available on some ships that require an additional fee but the service and food are generally 4 to 5 star and worth it if you want to splurge.

In my experience families with young children and people who go to bed early usually dine in first seating. But if you don’t want to be on a schedule or want to meet new people every night, go for the alternative dining option. Of course you can always ask for a table for two, but be aware that there are only a few of them.

If you make a special request one night, John always asks for blue cheese, your waiter will bring it every night. They pride themselves on remembering your tastes. (This only happens when you choose traditional dining). On one cruise we asked for Melba toast, and you bet, every night we had Melba toast. There is one thing I always make clear to the waiter. I am not a big eater but I like to taste everything. I tell this to them the first night so they don’t think I am unhappy with the food. It is their job to keep you happy and they take it very seriously.

If you don’t want to eat in the main dining room almost all ships have a Lido café where it is casual but you order from a menu and are served by a waiter. It’s one of the many choices if you don’t want to participate in a formal night or if you just want to eat by yourselves. On Carnivals single cruises they encourage this style of dining so the singles can meet more people. There are exceptions to this but not many. On some of the newer ships the Lido is open 24 hours a day.

On most of the cruise lines they offer the food of the region that you are visiting. While on Hawaiian cruises expect to be served Hawaiian food. When on an Alaskan cruise you will be given the choices of salmon and Alaskan king crab legs. It makes more fun to dine on the local cuisine.

All of the cruise lines offer healthy alternative menus or what they call spa menus. So if you want low-fat, low-salt, low cholesterol, vegetarian or any other type of diet, they are available. It is best however to inform your travel agent of any special needs so they can notify the cruise line ahead of time. If you have special dietary needs make sure the cruise lines knows before hand. For example, Royal Caribbean cruises cater to food allergy, Kosher, Indian, Vegetarian and Gluten Free Diets.
To be really safe read all of the cruise reviews and cruise critics sites for each ships food and service ratings.

The strength of the cruise industry is the main reason why many people find a job on a cruise ship very appealing. There has been an increase in cruise ship jobs in the last decade.

Over the last six years, more than 85,000 cruise ship jobs have been newly created to cater to the needs of running and maintaining a cruise line. In the next three years, a reported 26,000 more cruise ship employment opportunities will be produced. However, you may find a job on cruise ship not suitable for you after all. It is best to review the pros and cons of a cruise ship job before applying for one.

A job on a cruise ship isn’t all fun in the sun as others think. For one, you have to deal with homesickness, as most cruise lines require a contract that will only allow you to go home after every 2 to 3 months at sea. You might also have to deal with sea sickness.

Also, you won’t get to enjoy the perks that passengers have – lounging by the pool is off-limits, food choices are limited, room accommodations are tough and you’ll have to share with one or more roommates, and free time is often cut.

Of course, there are advantages to the job. Since you have free lodging and food, laundry service, and medical care, you can save your pay. Oftentimes, your family and friends can get discounted cruises. Most importantly, you get to travel, meet new people, and learn other cultures.

Of course, the pay salary of most cruise ship jobs is significantly higher than equivalent jobs on land. Plus, you get to travel to different ports and you do get some rest and relaxation at ports of call.

If you think you can handle it, then finding a job on a cruise ship now can be both financially rewarding and fun.
